The author of the publication offers readers documents characterizing the approach of the leading Soviet specialist in French studies Albert Manfred towards the translation into Russian of books by French historians on Modern history. He very reasonably recommended the translation into Russian and publication in the USSR of monographs by Claude Willard, Maurice Choury and Edgar Faure, and the republication of the memoirs of the famous French diplomat A. de Caulaincourt. Professor Manfred also wrote very friendly prefaces to the books Le mouvement socialiste en France (1893-1905) : les guesdistes by C. Willard and La Commune au cœur de Paris by M. Choury. At the same time, he gave negative reviews to proposals for the translation of such books as Metternich et son temps by Guillaume de Bertier de Sauvigny, Sur la Révolution française by Claude Mazauric and Précis d'histoire de la Révolution française by Albert Soboul. Although Manfred personally was in close friendly relations with Soboul, the leading French historian of the Revolution, he did not recommend the latter's book for translation into Russian because of ideological reasons. However, in the same review, he advised to translate into Russian another book by Soboul – his dissertation on the history of the Parisian Sans-Culottes during the Jacobin dictatorship, the translation of which was really published in 1966 under the editorship of Manfred himself. Soviet historian recommended also the publication in Russian of Soboul's book about the First French Republic of 1792–1804, to which Manfred himself wrote the preface.
